State lawmakers say Rhode Island's main electric utility could have responded better to widespread power outages caused when the remnants of Hurricane Irene hit the state.

A Senate committee questioned utility executives on their response to the storm during a State House hearing Thursday.

Sen. John Tassoni says a nursing home in his town of Smithfield went without power for six days despite pleas to National Grid.

Last month's storm knocked out power to well over half of National Grid's Rhode Island customers. For some, the outages lasted for several days as utility crews worked to repair downed power lines.

Tim Horan, president of National Grid-Rhode Island, told lawmakers that the utility began planning for the storm a week before it hit, and worked as quickly as possible to restore power.
