2 plead guilty in Seekonk student's death

Two friends of a top student and star athlete at Seekonk High School who died during horseplay on an Interstate highway have been sentenced to probation for their roles in the tragedy.

Nathan Dias and Jason McInerney, both 18, were placed on probation for one year after admitting in Taunton District Court to throwing tree branches on Interstate 195 on the night of Dec. 17, 2010.

Their friend, 18-year-old Jacob Mayo, who was participating in the prank, was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

The Sun Chronicle reports that prosecutors dropped six charges because while Dias and McInerney's actions were reckless, they were not criminal.

Defense lawyers asked for lighter sentences, saying the teens have taken responsibility for their actions.

Another friend has already been sentenced.
