The mayor of Woonsocket said Friday that he's not yet ready to say a piece of evidence apparently missing from the police department was stolen.
The NBC 10 I-Team reported that a necklace worth $22,000 is missing from the evidence room. The necklace was last seen in 2009. It is evidence in a criminal case.
Mayor Leo Fontaine said he's concerned that it is missing and not where it should be.
A source told the I-Team that officers took photos of themselves wearing the necklace.
"If that happened then and those officers are still there, we're going to be looking into that. It's inappropriate behavior. It's not something that we would stand for," Fontaine said.
Woonsocket police said an internal investigation is taking place and that they have been trying to find the necklace for several weeks.
It is not the first time evidence has been reported missing at the Woonsocket Police Department. Then-Chief Michael Houle destroyed drugs and other evidence in 2007.
