Authorities said a pool heater is the cause of a carbon monoxide leak at a West Virginia hotel that left a Rhode Island man dead and at least four others sick.

South Charleston Police Detective Andrew Gordon identified the deceased as 44-year-old William J. Moran of Rhode Island. Moran was among a group of construction workers from Rosciti Construction of Johnston staying at the hotel.

NBC 10 News reported that Moran is from Warwick.

South Charleston fire Capt. Virgil White said the heater was on the first floor at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in South Charleston.

Fire Chief Greg Petry says the dead man and three other men were found in a fifth-floor room Tuesday morning. The dead man and another man had failed to show up for work, and the others went to check on them and fell ill.

Anthony Rosciti of Rosciti Construction said five of his workers were in the hotel. Rosciti said they arrived in West Virginia on Monday to work on a government contract job.
