A star athlete at New Bedford Vocational-Technical High School was killed Thursday morning in a car crash on the way to school.
Two other people in the car were hurt.
State police said the car went out of control on Route 140 at about 7:30 a.m. and rolled over several times, coming to rest in the median.
Seventeen-year-old Andrew McCann, a passenger, was thrown from the car and killed. Two other teens, Julian Reis and Jarrell Ervin, were injured.
All three were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
McCann, the captain of the football and the baseball teams, was on life support.
The McCanns decided it would be better to let the young athlete go rather than risk having him survive in a terrible state.
"They said they'd been working on him for almost an hour. And they said if we work any more on him and he does survive, he's going to have major problems," McCann's father, Bruce McCann, said. "And we made the decision that we should just stop."
Bruce McCann said he was comforted by his son's teammates and friends, who filled the driveway Thursday at the family's New Bedford home.
McCann said his son had always been there for them and that his friends were there for the family to help them through their most difficult day.
"It makes me feel great knowing that all these kids really loved him," McCann said.
Friend and teammate Kyle Soares said he'd like to retire McCann's football jersey as a tribute to the teen who loved to make everyone else laugh.
"Just to show the kind of person he was, and not just as a sports player, but to everybody else. I can't really tell you anybody who can't say they don't like Andrew McCann," Soares said.
A candleight vigil was planned for Thursday night at the McCann's home.
