Newport's police chief said his department will be reviewing its response to a report of a missing woman who was found dead to see if anything could have been done better.
Chief Gary Silva told The Newport Daily News that such reviews are standard procedure after serious incidents.
Brenda Batts, 68, was reported missing by her family Wednesday evening. Her body was found near railroad tracks between Connell Highway and Hunter Park Thursday afternoon.
Silva agreed that some people may believe that police should have issued an alert through the city's Emergency Notification System. He said he was close to issuing an alert when Batts' body was found, but was waiting for information to be assessed and verified.
State police issued a Silver Alert for Batts.
