Brown University plans to create a campus memorial to mark the Ivy League university's historic ties to slavery.
The university's governing board has selected artist Martin Puryear to design and create the memorial, which will be placed near University Hall on the Providence campus.
Slaves helped build University Hall, and Rhode Island merchants who profited from the slave trade were among the university's earliest supporters.
University President Ruth Simmons says the memorial will invite "thoughtful inquiry about the world we have inherited."
Puryear was selected from more than 65 artists who were interested in creating the memorial. His selection was announced Saturday.
Brown hopes to have the memorial in place for the university's 250th anniversary in 2014.
