»  Comments | Post a Comment

Rhode Island students saw slight gains last year on state reading and math assessments.

The state education department said 73 percent of students were proficient or better in reading on the New England Common Assessment Program tests, up 2 percentage points from 2010. In math, 56 percent were proficient, up 1 point.

Middle-school students saw the largest gains: 74 percent were proficient in reading, a gain of 4 points, while 60 percent were proficient in math, a gain of 3 percentage points. Only 30 percent of high school students who took the math exam were proficient, a drop of 3 points.

Students in grades three through eight and grade 11 take the exams.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee said the rate of improvement isn't as great as the state would like to see.
