Students at the Rhode Island School of Design are teaming up with a sculptor to create artwork for a new U.S. embassy in Morocco.
It's only the second time the State Department has asked an art school to create artwork for the Art in Embassies program. The division of the State Department is responsible for selecting artwork for American embassies and consulates around the world.
Miami sculptor Jim Drain is working with a small number of RISD students on the project. The students used textiles, sculpture, wood, glass and other materials to create artwork inspired by Morocco. Drain will create a sculpture for the embassy that incorporates the student's work.
Construction of the new embassy in Rabat, Morocco, is expected to be completed by 2015.
