You've heard of lucky ducks. This is the story of a very fortunate goose.
Someone shot the goose with an arrow near a pond in Cranston, a place Bill Berubi drives by daily.
"I said I've got to catch this thing. I couldn't stand it. I saw it every day. It was suffering and I knew if I didn't catch it, it would die of infection," Berubi said.
Although Berubi knows his way around wildlife, he didn't have a way to grab the bird until he bought a $800 net gun to fire a net over the goose and catch it.
He took the goose to Veterinary Services of Wickford in North Kingstown, where the aptly named Dr. Meredith Bird performed the surgery to remove the arrow.
"It missed vital organs, but it was all the way thru the goose," Bird said. "So, we had to break off the tip of the arrow and extract the arrow like that. And I was amazed. It was a pretty easy surgery, just pull the arrow out, and he's doing very well now."
Because a house cat was shot by an arrow in the same part of Cranston last year, the goose will not be returned to the pond he came from.
But wherever he ends up, he's alive and getter thanks to Berubi.
"He's eating now, so he should be OK," Berubi said.
