Layoff notices have been authorized for 71 teachers in the Central Falls School District, which is facing a $5.6 million deficit.
The Providence Journal reported that the Central Falls School Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to issue the layoff notices.
Board chairwoman Anna Cano-Morales said state law requires that teachers be notified of a possible layoff by March 1.
The Journal reported that funding and declining student enrollment are the main reasons for the layoffs. Other teachers receiving layoff notices may have emergency certifications or have received poor reviews from administrators.
A state-appointed receiver filed for bankruptcy on the city's behalf in August. A trial set for March in federal bankruptcy court will determine whether the school district should be included the city's bankruptcy case.
