A woman was sentenced to prison Tuesday for her role in an October 2010 accident that injured a Providence city councilman.
The Rhode Island attorney general's office said Tihani Pichardo, 25, of Providence, pleaded guilty in Providence Superior Court to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, serious bodily injury.
She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, three-and-a-half years to serve with the remainder suspended with probation. She will also have her driver's license suspended for two years when she's released.
The attorney general's office said Pichardo was traveling east on Atwells Avenue on Oct. 29, 2010, when she struck councilman Terry Hassett, who was trying to get into his car.
Pichardo turned herself into authorities after the accident once she learned police had obtained a warrant for her arrest
Pichardo has been held without bail since Nov. 5, 2010.
Hassett has since recovered from his injuries and remains on the Providence City Council.
Dozens of speed humps now cross city streets, including the spot where Hassett was hit.
