Johnston fire crews were called to an apartment building fire in the early morning hours Tuesday.
The fire broke out at about 4 a.m. in a six-unit building on Starr Street.
Fire officials said the detection system in the building was working and that everyone inside escaped unharmed. Most of the residents left the building before the first crews arrived.
Fire Chief Timothy McLaughlin said the fire started on the exterior and traveled up the building, leading them to believe it may be suspicious. McLaughlin said firefighters knocked down the flames before they could spread.
A first-floor resident said the fire was right outside her son's bedroom window.
"I smelled smoke and looked out the window and it looked like the bushes were on fire," Michelle Bishaw said.
The Red Cross is helping six families with temporary housing.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
