Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is ordering up more state food inspectors to safeguard the health of Ocean State diners.
Chafee, an independent, is asking lawmakers to fund six additional food inspector positions in the fiscal year that begins July 1. The request was included in Chafee's $7.9 billion budget proposal.
The new inspectors would cost $230,000 the first year.
The request for more inspectors comes almost a year after two people died and dozens were sickened after eating pastries tied to a Rhode Island bakery. The bakery was ordered closed by the state's Department of Heath after inspectors found violations.
At the time, the state had seven inspectors for more than 8,000 eateries across the state.
