Brown U. student uncovers lost Malcolm X speech

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A student at Brown University has discovered a long-lost recording of a 1961 speech by Malcolm X at the Ivy League campus.

Malcolm Burnley found the tape while researching a class project. He says the recording preserves a little-remembered visit by Malcolm X and sheds new light on his ideological development.

Burnley says the tape is one of the earliest good recordings of Malcolm X, who was assassinated in 1965.

In the recording, Malcolm X is heard telling the mostly white audience that black Americans cannot wait for racial integration and must forge their own identity and culture.

Excerpts from the tape are set to be played at an event next week in Providence commemorating Malcolm X's visit.
