A federal bill backed by a Rhode Island congressman that is seeking to crack down on identity theft of foster care children has passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
U.S. Rep. James Langevin office says the legislation, sponsored by Democrat, requires states to run credit checks on foster youth over 16 years old before they age out of the system. It also ensures they get help clearing their records of inaccuracies that are the result of identity theft.
Langevin says foster youth are particularly vulnerable to identity theft because their personal information passes through so many hands.
His legislation, passed on Wednesday, is part of a larger bill on child and family services. That bill must also be approved by the Senate.
