Chafee signs executive order on homelessness

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has signed an executive order to revive an agency set up to strengthen efforts to end homelessness and improve permanent housing in Rhode Island.

Chafee signed the order re-establishing the Interagency Council on Homelessness on Tuesday at the State House.

The council establishes a mechanism for senior state officials to coordinate activities for housing and homelessness. It also develops strategies to address the problems associated with homelessness, makes recommendations for reducing the number of people without homes and promotes development of permanent supportive housing.

It had expired in 2009.

Experts and advocates have said a 10-year plan to end homelessness has stalled halfway through because of the recession, raising the number of people in shelters and transitional housing.
