The Providence School Board has chosen the schools superintendent in Portsmouth to temporarily lead the capital city's school system.
Susan F. Lusi has been selected as interim superintendent for Providence Public Schools. Lusi's experience includes work at the state Department of Education and the Providence School Department.
The state's education commissioner, Deborah A. Gist, praised Lusi's appointment on Wednesday. She says Lusi understands the challenges facing Providence schools.
Current superintendent Thomas M. Brady resigned in March, 1 1/2 years into a three-year contract, without giving a reason beyond wanting to move on to something else. He said he will step down on July 15.
Mayor Angel Taveras said when Brady resigned that a nationwide search for his permanent successor might continue beyond this summer.
