Cranston rescue workers saved a dog that fell through the ice Wednesday.

The large black-and-white dog went through the ice at Stone Pond at about 7:30 a.m. The dog became trapped in the water and could not get out.

A water rescue team equipped with a small boat and sled was able to pull the animal out of the water. The pond is on private property behind Stone Acre Drive.

The dog's owner was not present at the time of the rescue but did appear as the dog was being warmed up following his rescue.

Officials said even though the weather has been cold, it hasn't been cold long enough to completely freeze area lakes and ponds.

The state Department of Environmental Management monitors the conditions of state parks and ponds and said currently there is no safe ice in the state.

It takes nearly a week with temperatures in the low 20s to get the minimum 6 inches of ice safe for skating.

You can call the DEM's ice safety hotline at 401-222-2632.
