A driver trying to get her coffee to go made a crashing entrance into a Marylou's Coffee Shop in Cohasset on Friday, and surveillance video showed the minivan sailing right through the store.
"Before we knew it we turned around and there was a car parked in our store," said store manager Alyson Robson. "I just thought she was going to come up the curb at first when I saw it, and then it just came crashing through the building. I thought I was dreaming."
Emergency crews responded immediately and towed the minivan out of the storefront.
"The driver is reporting that she pulled in, she slowed and then the vehicle suddenly accelerated," Cohasset police Lt. William Quigley said.
The driver took out the front door and window, smashing stools and damaging almost everything inside. Investigators said it was a soda refrigerator that prevented the car from going out the back of the shop.
"Like a huge boom, and I was actually looking at it and I don't even remember hearing the sound," Robson said. "It was just kind of horrifying. Still, to watch it over and over again on the video."
Cleanup crews swept broken glass, removed splintered wood and tore down the back wall as the smell of morning coffee flowed from the hole in the storefront.
Fortunately, that was the worst of it. All three employees were behind the counter when the driver came through and there were no customers inside.
"It happened so fast there literally would have been no, there would have been no time to react," Robson said. "Usually at 7:15 a.m. it's pretty busy in there. So, we're just thanking God that there was no one in there."
The building was structurally sound.
Police said the driver was going 5 mph and that it was an accident. She will not receive a ticket.
