A subcommittee of the Cranston School Committee voted Tuesday to keep a prayer banner at Cranston West High School.
A parent complained about the banner last year, and the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union demanded the school remove it. The ACLU says it violates the separation of church and state.
Several local religious leaders said they would fight to keep it there.
The banner, which starts "Our Heavenly Father" and ends with "Amen," exhorts students to do their best and bring credit to the school. It has been in the school since the late 1950s.
The recommendation from the subcommittee to keep the school banner will go to a vote by the entire School Committee. The vote is expected to come within a month.
