A revitalized mill along the Acushnet River in New Bedford is now open for brand new lofts.
New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick on Tuesday toured the new lofts at Victoria Riverside Mill.
"This is something in New Bedford that we've been able to buck the tides of the recession," Lang said.
The entire project cost more than $32 million.
Officials hope the new lofts will set the stage for future development along the Acushnet River, which Lang said is being cleaned up for more use.
"We were involved in turning the Acushnet River into a recreational waterway again for the purpose of crew, kayak, canoe as well as prams and row boats," he said.
The project, officials hope, will fuel the rebuilding of other old buildings in the city.
"I thank all of you who have seen what we have seen here in New Bedford, which is the promise of a great community getting greater because we are building it intentionally," Patrick said.
State and local officials also applauded the developer's vision and determination.
"We're hoping that this will give the governor a reason to believe that he'll be back here again cutting another ribbon," said developer Stephen Ricciardi.
Rent on the units range from $950 to $1,395.
Lang said he hopes to see similar projects continue along the river.
