PPS releases most endangered properties list

PROVIDENCE -- The Providence Preservation Society on Wednesday released its list of the city's 10 most endangered properties.

The Kendrick-Prentiss House, which dates back to 1867 and is often referred to as the wedding cake house with gingerbread architecture, is on the list.

"People who come here, people who live here always comment on the incredible architectural character of our city, and we don't want to lose that. It's one of our most important resources," said Vance Freymann of the Providence Preservation Society.

Some of the other notables include the Atlantic Mills Towers on Manton Avenue that go back to 1860.

"I would love to be able to preserve it. We had a plan to preserve it but unfortunately events intervened. And we have not been able to raise sufficient capital to do the job," said Howard Brynes of Atlantic Mills.

Nothing but litigation has taken place at Grove Street Elementary School since partial demolition without a permit took place three years ago.

"We have a process whereby you have to go through before you can demolish any building, and this individual just began it without a permit. We stopped it, and now we've sued. Now we're in court trying to stabilize the building," said Providence Mayor David Cicilline.

The old-shuttered Temple Beth El on Broad Street is also on the list.

"People wouldn't feel right putting a club in a place like that. I think not but who knows. In New York, they've done that. New York, Chicago, so who knows…we're available as a resource to look at that building and help any prospective owners," Freymann said.
