PROVIDENCE -- A Rhode Island salon owner who had faced up to 30 years in prison for participating in a $1.7 million mortgage scam has instead been sentenced to one day behind bars and six months of home confinement.

Tashia Bodden of Providence, owner of Fascination Salon, was also sentenced on Wednesday in federal court to three years of probation and fined $3,000 after pleading guilty to bank fraud.

Prosecutors say one of Bodden's friends bought foreclosed properties, then persuaded others to have mortgages taken out in their names to purchase the houses at higher prices. Those people were left with loans in default.

Bodden provided the mortgage lenders with false pay stubs and tax forms that made it appear that the buyers worked at her salon.

Bodden says she made a bad decision to help someone she thought was a friend.
