WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is honoring the accomplishments of what he called "daring, indomitable" women in the United States, saying they have helped make the American story one of hope and progress.
The president on Monday joined first lady Michelle Obama at a White House event marking International Women's Day. He hailed women who have spent their lives challenging assumptions, changing laws and tearing down barriers.
Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts was among the invited guests. She is the first woman elected to the office in Rhode Island.
The president also promised to keep supporting efforts to empower women in the U.S. and around the globe.
Obama also poked fun at himself. He spoke of women like his wife who have looked across the dinner table and thought, "I'm smarter than that guy."
