PROVIDENCE - Greyhound racing would end at a financially troubled gambling parlor in Lincoln in a budget proposal before Rhode Island lawmakers.
A House committee will debate a new budget plan Tuesday from Gov. Don Carcieri that would end dog races at the Twin River slot parlor.
Slot machines at the gambling parlor are the third-largest source of income for state government. They were expected to raise $239 million this year, or 8 percent of all income raised by the state.
The slot parlor filed for bankruptcy protection in June as it struggled to repay a half-billion dollars in debt. Carcieri's legislation reflects a plan worked out in U.S. Bankruptcy Court that would allow the gambling hall to operate around the clock.
