RI, Bay State race to pass casino bill

It's a race between Massachusetts and Rhode Island, who will be the first state with a full fledged casino

The Rhode Island House Finance Committee held a hearing Tuesday on a bill filed by Rep. William San Bento of Pawtucket which would let Rhode Island voters decide in November whether to turn Twin River in Lincoln into a full fledged casino.

The bill also includes Newport Grand slot, which reportedly didn't ask to be included. Local leaders there have been against a casino in town. The committee could vote later on Wedensday.

The hearing came on the same day a hearing was held at the Massachusetts statehouse. That casino bill would allow casinos in the Bay State.

The Mashpee Wampanoags have entered an agreement with Fall River to build a casino resort on 300 acres along Route 24. And the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe from Martha’s Vineyard is proposing a casino on 240 acres near Route 195. The mayor there is not in favor of that plan.

But New Bedford's mayor was leading the charge on Tuesday. Mayor Scott Lang says a casino would people to work.

But others at the meeting testified about the negative effects of bringing a casino to the state.
