WARWICK, R.I. -- The spiritual leader of a temple in Warwick found hateful graffiti spray-painted on the building Thursday.
Cantor Richard Perlman said Temple Am David has been the target of vandals over the years, but mostly what he called "kids stuff."
This time, he said the graffiti was more than just vandalism. A swastika and part of the N-word were spray-painted on the side of the temple.
"This is something that not only is offensive to Jewish people but all people -- people of color, people of all different races and creeds. It was an upsetting morning," Perlman said.
A Warwick police detective collected a paint can from the grass as evidence and took a statement.
Perlman said the vandalism could be related to the Israeli commando raid on a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip that left nine people dead.
"I certainly hope that his has nothing at all to do with that. However, one would be silly to believe that that may not be a possibility. What's going on in the Gaza is a terrible thing," Perlman said.
With surveillance video and evidence, the congregation of Temple Am David hopes to find the vandals responsible.
