East Greenwich police chief stepping down in June

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- East Greenwich police chief David Desjarlais announced this week he plans to retire in June.

Chief Desjarlais has been chief in East Greenwich for more than 8 years.

The Providence Journal reports Desjarlais announced his intentions to retire at Monday night's Town Council meeting.

He told the paper he feels he has met the goals he set for himself when he took over the police department.

Desjarlais cited improved communications within the department and with the public, and the move of the deaprtment into a new facility on First Avenue in 2008.

Desjarlais has been an East Greenwich police officer for 23 years.
