Herald: Patrick would eliminate toll takers

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Toll booths may disappear on the Massachusetts Turnpike, but not the tolls.

The Boston Herald reported that Gov. Deval Patrick is exploring a plan to convert the Mass Pike to an open-road tolling system.

Traffic would move at highway speeds under sensors that detect transponders or snap a picture of license plates. Officials would have to decide whether to charge drivers without transponders a violation fee or the toll.

The state would save millions by eliminating toll takers.

The Herald reported that the proposal is still in the discussion phase and that the administration has not looked into the cost or design of the system.
