A Charlestown man who began a crusade against reckless drivers after his son was killed in a motorcycle crash was charged with drunken driving.
Richard "Robin" Foote, 60, was charged Thursday with driving under the influence, reckless driving, refusal to submit to a chemical test and disorderly conduct.
Foote is accused of chasing a teenage driver whom he said ran the same red light where his son was killed.
Police said the 16-year-old girl ran into the police station at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday upset and crying. They said Foote followed the girl into the foyer and said he was "turning her in."
Police said the girl told them Foote tailgated her and then pulled around her and slammed on the brakes in attempt to stop her. She drove to the police station because she was frightened, investigators said.
Foote was released to his wife.
The family's attorney, James O'Neil, asked the family's privacy be respected.
"Since May of this year, the Foote Family has been dealing with an unimaginable loss and tragedy. Mr. Foote will address the charges in the appropriate forum at the appropriate time," a statement from O'Neil said.
Foote's son, Colin Foote, was killed in May when his motorcycle was struck by a woman who ran a red light on Route 1.
Laura Reale had a record of 19 previous driving violations before the fatal crash. She is expected to be sentenced Dec. 17.
Robin Foote advocated for laws to promote safer driving. The governor signed The Colin B. Foote Act into law over the summer. It created tougher penalties for habitual traffic offenders.
