Volcano throws vacation plans into chaos

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The phones at Collette Vacations in Pawtucket were busy Tuesday, and the representatives were even busier.

They've been handling more than 1,000 clients stranded in destinations across the world because of the ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland.

"It's been very chaotic, but we have a great team and they've handled it tremendously," said Collette Vacations CEO Dan Sullivan.

Sullivan said the company is making the best of the situation by staying in close contact with its clients and talking them through the process.

"We're making sure that they feel safe and that they know we have an open line so we'll get them home on the first available flight," Sullivan said.

Sullivan said many of Collette's clients are opting to rebook rather than cancel their vacations.

"We're having to rebook people and then sometimes rebook them again," Sullivan said. "Now were scheduling them on other tours because they couldn't get them out in the next couple of days. Then the flights are all backlogged. So, we have to get them on other departures."

Sullivan said some clients will depart later in April, while others opted to postpone their vacations until summer or fall.
