Mass. House approves bill to add 2 casinos, slots

BOSTON -- House lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved a bill to license two resort-style casinos in Massachusetts and allow up to 3,000 slot machines at the state's four race tracks.

The 120-37 vote brings the state one step closer to the largest expansion of gambling in Massachusetts since lawmakers approved the state lottery in 1971.

The bill was filed by Democratic Speaker Robert DeLeo. He succeeded in persuading enough House lawmakers to back the proposal to withstand a veto by Gov. Deval Patrick, who opposes racetrack slots. The governor has not said whether he would veto the bill.

In 2008, House lawmakers voted overwhelming against a proposal by Patrick to license three casinos.

The vote Wednesday came after two days of impassioned debate during which lawmakers beat back a series of amendments.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
