Post office won't extend hours for April 15

The U.S. Postal Service said it will not offer extended hours at post offices in the Southeast New England District on Thursday, the day income taxes are due.

The number of customers coming to the post office in later hours has declined dramatically in recent years because many people file their taxes online. The post office has been looking for ways to cut costs because of the economy and the drop in mail volume. Additionally, the IRS Web site said the tax deadline was extended for flood victims.

The Providence post office at Corliss Street will be open until 9 p.m., its usual closing time during the week. Customers can find out their local post office hours by going online at usps.com or by calling 1-800-ASK-USPS to determine the closing time of the post office near them.

Some post offices also have an Automated Postal Center in their lobbies that are accessible 24 hours per day.

Lobbies with APCs that have 24-hour access include the main post offices in Providence, Wakefield, Cranston, East Greenwich and Johnston.

In addition, in Massachusetts, there are APCs in Randolph and Mansfield.
