Staging stolen from festival site

FALL RIVER, Mass. - Fall River officials say 14 sections of aluminum staging worth an estimated $17,000 have been stolen, leaving organizers of a city festival scrambling for a replacement stage.

Paul Simister, president of the Friends of Heritage State Park, tells The Herald News the aluminum was stolen from a secured storage area underneath Route 79 over two nights last week. It was reported to police on Tuesday.

Each section measures 4 feet by 8 feet, is 8-inches thick and weighs about 100 pounds. He says it would take at least two people and a large truck to steal the staging, which belongs to the state.

Salvage yards in the area have been notified in case the thieves try to sell the aluminum as scrap.

The Heritage Park Harvest Festival is scheduled for Oct. 2.
