BARNSTABLE, Mass. -- A 72-year-old Bourne man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter the day he was to go on trial for stabbing his wife to death in 2006.

William Romero pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing his wife, Elaine, by stabbing her 45 times in October 2006. Prosecutors said she was found naked and dead on a neighbor's porch with a trail of blood leading back to her home.

Romero was initially charged with murder. He'll be given a psychiatric evaluation before he's sentenced on the manslaughter plea.

In court Tuesday, Romero admitted he stabbed his wife, but said he was defending himself.

Judge Richard Connon told Romero that self-defense with excessive force is still manslaughter.
