PROVIDENCE -- The hull of Rhode Island's tall ship has been towed from Newport to Providence for steel and mechanical work.

Once complete, the Oliver Hazard Perry will stand 13 stories tall and measure 207 feet long.

A Newport nonprofit bought the steel hull from two Canadian businessmen with plans to convert it into a training ship that will serve as a floating sailing school for students and apprentice seamen.

It was towed Wednesday by a tugboat from Newport to Providence, where it will be power-washed and undergo other work at Promet Marine Services.

The Oliver Hazard Perry is named for a Rhode Island-born commodore who routed a British fleet during the War of 1812.

The tall ship is expected to launch in 2011.
