PROVIDENCE -- Democrat Scott Slater will fill the state House of Representatives seat of his late father, Rep. Thomas Slater, who died earlier this year from cancer.

Slater defeated two other candidates for the House District 10 seat in Providence.

Slater had 661 votes, or 66 percent. Independent Wilbur Jennings, Jr. had 232 votes and Republican Maurice Green had 116 votes.

The 34-year-old Slater is a budget analyst for the city of Providence. He beat six other candidates in a special Democratic primary in October.

House District 10 includes three West End neighborhoods.

Rep. Thomas Slater died of cancer in August. He successfully pushed for the legalization of medical marijuana in Rhode Island.
