Animal keepers at Angelcat Haven in Plainville have named three kittens that survived a brush fire Smudge 1, Smudge 2 and Smudge 3.
PLAINVILLE, Mass. -- Three badly burned kittens are recovering at a shelter in Plainville after escaping a brush fire last week.
The female kittens are from the same litter. They've been named Smudge 1, 2, and 3.
"They were probably just living out there with a stray mom," said Angela Frankudakis of Angelcat Haven. "They were just actually running through the fire to get out of it."
The kittens suffered burns on their faces, whiskers, ears and paws.
"Their noses were all raw and bleeding, their paws started to swell up because their paw pads were so burned. The skin was sloughing off. It was just awful," Frankudakis said.
Frankudakis said cats are different than dogs in being able to psychologically recover from a traumatic injury or event.
"Once they're in a comfortable area where they know it's safe, they don't carry the long-term, psychological effects that dogs will have," Frankudakis said.

Smudge 2 has been reserved for adoption, but like the other surviving two, they'll all need another month of medication and recovery time before being discharged.
"Right now, they're recovering quite nicely. They've had two office visits, and they're on medication. We've been lucky. They're rebounding quite nicely," said Frankudakis.
Angelcat Haven has been busier than ever since the economic downturn, with more abandoned cats and stray litters needing help.
