Richard Paiva
CUMBERLAND, R.I. -- A Cumberland man has been ordered held without bail on charges that he killed his mother.
Richard Paiva, 36, was arraigned in District Court in Providence on Monday on charges including murder and felony domestic assault. He did not enter a plea.
He's accused of killing his mother, Rita, whose body was found inside her Cumberland home on Monday morning after police were asked to check on her.
Authorities say they found knives around Rita Paiva's body and believe she was stabbed repeatedly.
Police said they were called to the home over the weekend for another domestic complaint.
"It's always kinda tragic over there," said neighbor Kyle Parker. "There's always fighting around there."
Paiva also faces a misdemeanor charge of failing to relinquish a telephone during an emergency. He's due back in court next week.
The public defender assigned to represent Paiva requested a competency report.
