EXETER, R.I. - Advocates for the developmentally disabled began a 72-hour vigil Monday at the marker of the original "Rhode Island School for the Feeble-Minded."
The building in Exeter, which became known as the Ladd Center, was ordered closed after an investigation into poor conditions there in the late 1970s. The Ladd Center closed in 1994.
The vigil was designed to honor people who were housed at the Ladd Center during its 75-year history. Advocates also hoped to bring attention to proposed state budget cuts that could potentially impact services for the disabled.
The demonstrators will follow up the vigil with a rally at the State House on Wednesday in support of programs for the disabled.
