Providence Mayor David Ciclline on Monday signed an executive order targeting a loophole in adult entertainment regulations.
The Providence Journal reported last week that there is no city ordinance or state law that prevents a minor from stripping in Rhode Island.
Cicilline's executive order prohibits the city Board of Licenses from issuing a license to any adult club that employs anyone under 18 or allows a minor to perform exotic dancing.
"Exploiting minors is totally reprehensible and the loophole that allows it must be closed immediately," Cicilline said in a news release. "This order gives the Providence Licensing Board some real power while the process of developing local and state legislation is underway."
Cicilline said he supports City Councilman Michael Solomon's efforts to draft a local ordinance to close the loophole.
"Obviously we need this law on the books for future reference so this doesn't happen again so that there's not a young lady working in the adult entertainment clubs," Solomon said.
