PROVIDENCE -- Providence's main post office will be closing on Sundays because of substantial drops in mail volume and revenue.
The U.S. Postal Service said Thursday that the office will no longer be open on Sundays starting Aug. 16.
A statement from the Postal Service says the economy has caused the decrease in mail volume and staffers have reduced costs wherever possible.
Officials say they examined customer traffic and found fewer transactions on Sunday than in years past.
The lobby will remain open so customers can access 24-hour automated postal centers.
