PROVIDENCE -- The Providence VA Medical Center is receiving $19.3 million from the federal government for several construction projects.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy announced Friday that the money will go toward building specialty clinics at the veterans' center and upgrading electrical systems. Other portions are devoted to expanding the pharmacy, relocating administration facilities and designing a mental health services building.

The Rhode Island Democrat, who serves on an appropriations subcommittee for veterans' affairs, says the money came from the appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009.

Kennedy says the improvements make for a more efficient and effective hospital for veterans.
