Downloading arguments to be streamed

BOSTON - A judge has authorized the first online streaming of oral arguments in a federal court in Massachusetts.

Judge Nancy Gertner will allow live streaming of a Jan. 22 hearing in copyright infringement lawsuit that pits a Boston University graduate student against the music recording industry.

The case is part of an effort by the Recording Industry Association of America to stop online music sharing. Most of those sued have been college students.

Charles Nesson, a Harvard professor representing Joel Tenenbaum, is challenging the constitutionality of the suits and asked the court to authorize the webcast.

The music industry opposed the streaming, but Gertner said most defendants in the lawsuits have grown up with the Internet and get their news from it.

The ruling applies only to next week's hearing and the judge will decide later whether to allow future hearings in the case to be streamed.
