TAUNTON, Mass. -- Utility crews in Taunton worked through the night to replace cables damaged in a series of manhole explosions Monday in the area of Main and Trescott streets.
NBC 10's Brian Crandall reported that the fire in the underground cables at Main and Trescott streets caused a chain reaction. The force of the explosion blew off four manhole covers, one of which broke an empty store front window.
One man walking his dog in the area was hurt, though the Taunton Gazette reports his injuries are not said to be serious.
Witnesses told NBC 10 they heard a loud boom, and then saw flames and smoke coming out of the manhole covers at about noon.
Nearby businesses were evacuated and police closed the street. Officials from Taunton Municipal Light and Power said they don’t know what caused the electrical short in the cables.
