PROVIDENCE -- Providence Mayor David Cicilline will soon announce the details of two ordinances designed to help people at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure.
Mortgage foreclosures have doubled in Providence during the last two years. Defaults have spread from the state's lower-income city neighborhoods to bedroom communities as unemployment soars. Joblessness hit 10 percent in December.
Cicilline will discuss his plans during a news conference Monday. One ordinance is intended to protect tenants who can lose their apartments when their landlords cannot pay their mortgages. Another will give homeowners additional help to negotiate with lenders.
