NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- North Smithfield's animal control officer is telling residents to stay away from wildlife and keep their pets indoors after a rabid fox was found in town.

Animal Control Officer Scott Goodwin said the fox was killed by a car in the East Harkness Road area on Christmas night.

Test results on the animal's body came back positive for rabies on Tuesday.

Goodwin said residents should also make sure their pets' shots are up to date.

He's also calling on residents to call him if they see any wildlife or stray animals that appear sick.
