Local GOP chairs want Laffey for governor

PROVIDENCE -- Local leaders in Rhode Island's Republican Party say they want former Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey to run for governor.

Lincoln GOP chairman Michael Napolitano said Laffey attended a meeting Saturday with leaders from 19 local GOP committees who voted unanimously to support Laffey if he runs.

Laffey did not commit to a run at the meeting, and he did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

The GOP lacks a candidate for the race to succeed Republican Gov. Don Carcieri, who must leave office in January 2011 after finishing his second term. Republican Rory Smith dropped out of the race earlier in the month.

Laffey challenged Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee in the 2006 GOP primary. Chafee won the primary but ultimately lost to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.
