National Grid removes decommissioned natural gas tanks

»  Comments | Post a Comment

PROVIDENCE -- National Grid is tearing down the last of two decommissioned natural gas tanks once owned by New England Gas.

The removal of the tanks is part of a face lift for the Fields Point industrial area of Providence.

The tanks date back to the 1890s when coal was processed into natural gas.

The company said they were collecting rain water and there's contamination in the bottom of the tanks.

The $2 million remediation and removal project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.

A similar project on two tanks in Pawtucket is scheduled for next summer.
